Ajax, Scugog: municipalities turn to cheaper road tech for upcoming projects

Ajax is piloting hot in-place asphalt recycling on Rossland Road starting October 26, while Scugog replaces the Line 2 culvert with a prefabricated steel modular bridge the same week. Both municipalities say the newer approaches cut costs and speed up work.

Ajax and Scugog are turning to newer, cheaper road technologies for upcoming projects, the Durham Post reports. Ajax is piloting hot in-place asphalt recycling on Rossland Road between Audley Road and Lake Ridge Road, with work starting October 26 over a two-day period, weather permitting.

Per a Town of Ajax statement, the pilot reuses existing asphalt at about 44 per cent less cost than traditional resurfacing, with potential reductions of about 72 per cent in greenhouse gas emissions and 74 per cent in petroleum-based material use. The recycling equipment is engineered and maintained locally in Ajax; the town will evaluate the method over four years. Short-term traffic delays may occur, though residents retain access to all homes and properties.

Meanwhile, Scugog is replacing the Line 2 culvert, about 1.35 kilometres east of Hwy 7/12, with a prefabricated steel modular bridge the week of October 26 — a roughly two-week job, weather permitting. A road closure from Old Simcoe Road to Diamond Side Road starts at 8 a.m. October 26; local traffic is maintained but through traffic is not permitted in the construction zone.
